Gold Just Dropped 3.4% on a Risk-Off Day. That Tells You Everything.

Gold was supposed to be the hedge. On Friday, October 30, it was not.

He Doesn’t Buy Gold. He “Skims” It.

A former hedge fund manager ranked in the top 1% by Barron’s has developed a three-step strategy to profit from gold – without buying a single ounce.

His followers have had the chance to collect $2,975… $3,781… and even $6,786 at a time. With a 73% win rate.

He calls it “Gold Skimming.” And he’s just revealed the full strategy for the first time.

Spot gold fell 3.5% to $3,880.97 an ounce, its lowest level since October 2025, even as equity markets suffered one of their worst sessions in months. The metal did not catch a safety bid. It accelerated lower alongside risk assets, a breakdown in the correlation that most investors holding gold as portfolio insurance have been counting on.

What’s Driving the Market

The proximate trigger was a one-two punch from the data calendar. Third-quarter GDP growth beat expectations, while September PCE inflation rose 0.5% on the month and 3.6% year-on-year. That combination pushed December rate-hike pricing sharply higher. According to the CME FedWatch tool, the chance of a quarter-point hike at the December 9 meeting climbed to about the 75% to 90% range after the Fed held its benchmark rate at 3.75% to 4% on October 28.

Elevated real yields increase the cost of holding gold because gold provides no yield. That is the mechanical explanation. But it does not fully account for a 3.4% single-session drop.

The fuller answer is leverage. Analysts have noted that the sharp fall in technology stock prices may have led to forced selling and margin calls. When equity books get hit, portfolio managers liquidate what is liquid and profitable, or was. Gold ran from below $4,000 to about $5,600 in January. The positions built during that rally were large, and many were financed. Gold is down roughly 30% from that January peak, pressured by bets on higher-for-longer interest rates and muted physical demand. Friday was not a fundamental reassessment. It was forced liquidation meeting thin Friday volume.

As one analyst put it: in this environment, gold is not acting as the safe haven people expect. Physical gold demand in key Asian markets remained subdued, with Indian buyers delaying purchases in anticipation of further price declines, while demand in top consumer China stayed muted. With both the investment bid and the physical bid absent simultaneously, the only price-setting actors left were sellers.

The Investment Opportunity

The miners absorbed the blow with the leverage they always provide, in both directions. GDX closed October 30 at $77.09, down from a prior close of $81.33. About 92% of GDX holdings had already fallen below their 50-day moving averages heading into this week. The breadth deterioration preceded the price deterioration, a warning sign that was visible before Friday.

Newmont tells the deeper story. The company posted record Q3 adjusted earnings of $2.20 per share, beating analysts’ consensus estimates of $1.94 by $0.26, yet shares fell 4.6% on October 30, closing at $106.61. Record earnings, falling stock. That is what a sentiment-driven selloff looks like: the fundamentals are not the problem.

Analysts say central-bank demand can strengthen on weakness below round-number levels like $4,000, a pattern worth watching as sovereign buyers have been consistent accumulators during 2026’s decline. For investors with a 12-to-18-month horizon, the miner valuations appearing now are meaningfully different from those of January.

Risks to Monitor

Standard Chartered’s Suki Cooper warned that gold must hold support at $3,886, and a sustained break could trigger a deeper correction. Analysts warn of further losses if key support breaks, though a Reuters survey forecasts a median price of $4,495 for 2026. The December FOMC meeting on the 9th is the next binary event: a hike that Chair Warsh frames as the final move is very different from one that keeps March live.

Silver, platinum, and palladium entered technically oversold territory after falling 7% to 9% this week. Oversold conditions can persist longer than expected when macro pressure is uniform and the redemption cycle at gold ETFs is still running.

Bottom Line

What investors should understand today is that Friday’s selloff was not a verdict on gold’s long-term role. It was a demonstration of how leveraged the ownership structure became during the January rally, and how quickly that leverage unwinds when equities crack and margin calls cascade. The metal’s fundamentals, central-bank demand, real-yield trajectory, reserve diversification, have not changed in a session. The price has. For investors who were underexposed during the 2025-to-January 2026 run, the question is whether $3,883 is a gift or a falling knife. The answer depends almost entirely on what the Fed signals on December 9.
